Adam Baratz goes one month without a smartphone, overcomes the challenges, and embraces the rewards.
We’ve heard from people wanting to know what moving from a traditional smartphone to a Wisephone would look like and what the potential benefits are. One of our customers, who switched to a Wisephone at the start of the year, wrote an article sharing how his new phone helped him improve his focus and spend more intentional time offline.
We hope his openness and the benefits he shares—will help others know what to expect and how to navigate their own Wisephone journey.
"In the space where the compulsion used to be, I am rediscovering the texture of my own life.”
Overcoming Digital Addiction
On his first day with a Wisephone, Adam Baratz noticed he had been filling every gap by consuming content. Without constant distractions, those moments became open and quiet. He realized his dependency when he kept reaching for his device, waiting for a dopamine hit that never came.
Building on this awareness, Adam reflected on how he had previously spent more than four hours a day on his phone. He describes feeling trapped by the myth of productivity while scrolling endlessly. With a smartphone, there is no barrier between work and unproductive compulsion, making it easy to blur the line between the two.
This shift in perspective led Adam to understand why the advice to just delete apps had failed him. Despite his desire to spend less time on his phone, he hadn’t realized how deeply his dependency stood in his way until he removed the temptation entirely.
“Wanting to spend less time on your phone while carrying an iPhone is like trying to quit smoking with an unlit cigarette already in your mouth.”
Why Traditional Dumb Phones Aren’t the Answer
People who switch to dumb phones report feeling uncomfortable with how dependent they become on others. Our daily lives depend on mobile apps, and having no access to them is no longer realistic.
For those who value independence, a dumb phone requires too much sacrifice.
What You Keep With Wisephone
Adam found that he retained approximately 80% of the functionality he had with an iPhone. That includes calling, texting, ride share, maps, Spotify, Venmo, airline travel, and banking tools. For those who prefer to pay with Google Wallet, Wisephone offers that app as well. And if you are a birdwatcher who uses the Merlin Bird app, it is also included.
The few gaps and constraints that come with the lack of a web browser soon became manageable for Adam. He found ways to work around them.
But what surprised him was the social pressure that comes with losing access to apps available only through the Apple ecosystem. Group chats lose features that made his contacts aware he had made a switch.
“Apple's engineering is world-class, but a meaningful portion of its market premium is protected by systems designed not to serve users, but to prevent them from leaving.”
The Big Wins for Adam
Despite a few challenges, Adam has found the upsides of switching to Wisephone to be “extraordinary.” He now has three to four additional hours in his day to be more productive. For example, Adam read a book while waiting for his flight at an airport gate, which he hadn’t done in years. And he’s spent more time connecting with his wife.
