Chris shares his healthy tech journey with Evan, inspired by fostering two teenage girls and by his concern for their well-being. Their case worker warned him against allowing smartphone access due to the girls' past negative online experiences.
Chris and his wife faced a common parenting dilemma: either restrict device access to protect their kids and risk being the “bad guy,” or find a better option. This highlighted the broken relationship with technology and the lack of safe devices for kids.
Using the LEAN principals for creating error-proof systems, Chris learned in manufacturing that the problem lay in the systems and design, not the device itself. Creating device-level boundaries was the key. With error-proof systems, parents could hand a device to their child without putting them at risk and creating tension around boundaries and rules.
Chris realized building a safe device for kids was where he could make the biggest difference. Research showed that companies failed at this because their phones looked like toys, not real smartphones—and kids didn't want them.
So, Chris set out to create a phone that looked the same but operated differently, offering a unique experience focused on simplicity and intentional use. And thus began the long, arduous journey that brought us to Wisephone.
Chris also described our company’s belief in real-world interaction over digital engagement. While in-person connection requires effort, its benefits to well-being are worth it.
